What is MicroNeedling; Collagen Induction Therapy?
MicroNeedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure used to treat skin problems through collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment can help reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks.
It is also used in certain anti-aging procedures, such as eyelid surgery and sun damage.
You may be an ideal candidate for this procedure if you are in good health and have certain skin problems that have not responded to home therapies or other types of dermatological procedures, such as peels.
This can also be a final step before considering cosmetic surgery for anti-aging and other problems. Learn more about Micro-Needling and talk to your dermatologist to see if this is the right option for your skin.
It is considered effective in treating minor scars caused by acne, wounds and aging. You will probably also notice that your skin is brighter and firmer.
Ideal results are achieved after several sessions.
MicroNeedling is much more effective than rollers for home use.
Target areas for MicroNeedling:
MicroNeedling is usually used on your face to target:
Acne scars
Age spots (also called “sun damage”)
Fine lines and wrinkles
Large pores
Other scars
Improvements in skin elasticity
Uneven complexion
In addition to facial concerns, Micro-Needling (Collagen Induction Therapy) is sometimes used to treat stretch marks on other parts of the body. Scars on other parts of the body can also be treated with this procedure. However, MicroNeedling is primarily used on the face.
MicroNeedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen.
The idea is that punctures from the procedure cause slight injuries to the skin, and the skin responds by producing new collagen-rich tissue.
This new skin tissue, in turn, is more even in tone and texture. It is normal for the skin to lose collagen due to aging or injury. By encouraging the skin to create new tissue, there can be more collagen to make the skin firmer as well.
During the procedure, your doctor makes tiny punctures under the skin with a pen-like instrument.
The punctures are so small that you probably won’t notice them after the procedure. Your doctor moves the instrument evenly over your skin so that the new skin that renews will also be even.
Before you begin, your doctor will use a local anesthetic to reduce the chance of pain. This occurs about an hour before your treatment. The actual process of Micro-Needling (Collagen Induction Therapy) takes about 30 minutes.
Your doctor may then apply a serum or soothing treatment. In total, you can expect to spend at least a couple of hours in the practice.
MicroNeedling preparation
Before the procedure, discuss with your doctor how best to prepare for optimal results. You may need to stop certain medications, such as ibuprofen and acne treatment drugs, well before the procedure.
